Small-Scale Isotropy and Ramp-Cliff Structures in Scalar Turbulence
نویسندگان
چکیده
Passive scalars advected by three-dimensional Navier-Stokes turbulence exhibit a fundamental anomaly in odd-order moments because of the characteristic ramp-cliff structures, violating small-scale isotropy. We use data from direct numerical simulations with grid resolution up to $8192^3$ at high P\'eclet numbers understand this as scalar diffusivity, $D$, diminishes, or Schmidt number, $Sc = \nu/D$, increases; here $\nu$ is kinematic viscosity fluid. The microscale Reynolds number varies 140 650 and $Sc$ 1 512. A simple model for structures shown characterize derivative statistics extremely well. It accurately captures how isotropy restored large-$Sc$ limit, additionally suggests slight correction Batchelor length scale relevant smallest field.

Isotropy vs anisotropy in small-scale turbulence
The decay of large-scale anisotropies in small-scale turbulent flow is investigated. By introducing two different kinds of estimators we discuss the relation between the presence of a hierarchy for the isotropic and the anisotropic scaling exponents and the persistence of anisotropies. Direct measurements from a channel flow numerical simulation are presented. One of the main assumptions made b...
متن کاملGeneration of small - scale structures in the developed turbulence
The Navier-Stokes equation for incompressible liquid is considered in the limit of infinitely large Reynolds number. It is assumed that the flow instability leads to generation of steady-state large-scale pulsations. The excitation and evolution of the smallscale turbulence is investigated. It is shown that the developed small-scale pulsations are intermittent. The maximal amplitude of the vort...

We investigate using direct numerical simulations with grids up to 1536(3) points, the rate at which small scales develop in a decaying three-dimensional MHD flow both for deterministic and random initial conditions. Parallel current and vorticity sheets form at the same spatial locations, and further destabilize and fold or roll up after an initial exponential phase. At high Reynolds numbers, ...
متن کاملLarge-scale anisotropy in scalar turbulence.
The effect of anisotropy on the statistics of a passive tracer transported by a turbulent flow is investigated. We show that under broad conditions an arbitrarily small amount of anisotropy propagates to the large scales where it eventually dominates the structure of the concentration field. This result is obtained analytically in the framework of an exactly solvable model and confirmed by nume...
متن کاملUniversality of small scale turbulence.
The proposed universality of small scale turbulence is investigated for a set of measurements in a cryogenic free jet with a variation of the Reynolds number (Re) from 8500 to 10(6) (max(R(lambda) approximately 1200). The traditional analysis of the statistics of velocity increments by means of structure functions or probability density functions is replaced by a new method which is based on th...
